With the development of globalization, international contacts have become moreand more frequent. What’s more, our country has been taking effective measures tofurther the opening up and reform policies. When more and more cooperative programsin all fields are initiated between China and foreign countries, increasingly moregraduates at all levels with intercultural competence are in urgent need in the workplace.However, the current situation of the English education in China’s junior middleschools, among others, cannot fully satisfy the need of social development in our country.At present, the English teaching at this stage still focuses on imparting languageknowledge while giving undue attention to enhancing students’ awareness of Englishculture. Although many English teachers in the junior middle school realize theimportance of cultural knowledge teaching in foreign language teaching, they do notimplement it effectively for various reasons. In order to meet the needs of the increasingcross-cultural communication, English teaching in the junior middle school should aim atdeveloping students’ communicative competence, pragmatic competence and culturalawareness—in addition to acquirement of language skills. This thesis is intended toprobe into cultural teaching in the middle school, especially the teaching that targets thenew Junior English for China as its firsthand material, the new English CurriculumStandards as its foundation, and the junior middle school students as its specific objects.This thesis is made up of five parts: Part One is the general introduction to thebackground, including the significance of study. Part Two is a literature review whichintroduces the specific contents and introduces the conceptual cultural teaching in anoverview. Part Three focuses on the principles of teaching cultural knowledge in thejunior middle school; Part Four is that it also summarizes the cultural contents of Go forIt and give some strategies for culture teaching. Part five is the conclusion.
