The Audiolingual method was very popular in the1950s in the field of English teaching. It refers to a teaching method that puts listening and speaking first, and then focuses on reading and writing. The theoretical foundation of the Audiolingual method is the structural linguistics and behaviorism. This method uses the dialogue as the main form of presentation, and the sentence patterns as the main training techniques. Because of some problems in application of the Audiolingual method and disadvantages of the Audiolingual method itself, since the1960s, the Audiolingual method has continuously faced the challenges of new development of linguistics, and psychological theory and new teaching methods forming under the guidance of these theories. But many principles and techniques of The Audiolingual method are still useful today.The Audiolingual method had a big impact on English teaching in China and many experienced teachers accumulated some experience in the application of the Audiolingual method and made great achievements. In order to know the real condition of the application of the Audiolingual method in middle school English teaching, the author observed and recorded three teaching samples. To improve the use of the Audiolingual method and finally improve teaching quality, the author analyzed the teaching objectives, teaching procedures, teaching activities and role of teachers and the students in the three teaching samples and discussed whether they followed the Audiolingual principles and met the requirements of the method. The research found that the teachers basically followed the Audiolingual principles, used some of the Audiolingual techniques and made some improvements to achieve the teaching objectives in the teaching process. More attention should be paid to the combination of the Audiolingual method and other teaching methods and teaching techniques. The comparison of the differences between the application of the Audiolingual method in junior high school and senior high school need to be studied in the further research.
