This thesis mainly discusses the existed problems and optimization of the Learning Plan (LP, for short) in senior middle schools. LP is designed on the basis of the Standards of the New English Curriculum and actual levels of the students. It aims to cultivate students’innovation and self-taught ability by guiding students to learn, cooperate and explore actively. At present, there are many relevant researches at home and abroad, however, there is little research about the application of LP in English teaching and learning. As an English teacher long engaged in a high middle school, the author knows a lot about the existed problems of the application of LP in English learning and teaching. He feels it essential to set up a set of effective methods for English LP. So in view of relevant research and some characteristics of English teaching in a senior middle school, the author has designed a set of LP implementation. And an experimental study has been carried out for about one term aiming to solve the following problems:1) How could the optimization of LP help improve the students’interest in English learning?2) How can it help improve the students’study ability and effectiveness in English learning by an application of optimized LP to update their proficiency as a whole?Based on the theories of constructivism and students-centered orientation, the research focuses on the optimization of making LP and its application. Moreover, it attaches importance to students’test scores in English learning as well as an development of their emotion, interest and ability. In our study, students were first divided into four groups: excellent (above100points), good (90to99points), unqualified (60to89points) and poor (below60points) based on the results of the first month exam of Grade Two. After one term experiment, the author analyzed the results of midterm and final exams and used an Excel to analyze the related data of the four groups obtained before, during and after the experiment and make a comparison. The author then discussed the different changes with average scores between the two experimental classes and the whole grade. The experiment was made by means of questionnaires, tests and dialogue. In connection with the data, the author investigated into a change of the students’attitudes and interest in English-learning and an improvement in their ability in self-taught, cooperative learning, their performance and results after an optimization of LP.Our study has shown two findings:1) The optimization of LP and its application can raise students’interest and they become more active in English learning.2) It can improve the students’ability in self-taught and cooperative learning, and it can also greatly improve the students’test results and promote their English proficiency as a whole. However, there is some limitation in our study as it was carried out only for one term. The optimization of LP and its application require further revision especially in terms of the different needs of all students.
