Based on the four years’Chinese teaching practices as a rural teacher in special positions who just stepped into the teaching faculty, I discover that there are no distinct differences between the quantity of literacy in primary Chinese textbooks for lower grades and higher grades, but on the other hand, the length of the texts as well as the number of the illustrations are obviously varied. As far as the Chinese teaching for lower grades is concerned, students are still under the gradual development stage in terms of their learning awareness, behavioral habits, abstract thinking and so on. Besides, with the environmental specialties in rural regions, it’s difficult for teachers to complete their teaching tasks within the due class period. However, it’s detected that out of visual attraction, students of lower grades are greatly interested in the colorful illustrations in the textbooks. In the developed teaching regions, the adoption of multi media teaching has overlooked the importance of illustrations; while for less developed rural teaching regions, such illustrations are considered as essential teaching resources that can be fully utilized. Therefore, it’s of great necessity for us to conduct research on the illustrations in textbooks. Illustrations in textbooks are of directional significance to the textbooks reformation which is intended to adapt itself to the quality-oriented education; moreover, for infants and students of lower grades who are yet fully developed in literacy quantity and abstract thinking, those visual and vivid illustrations are helpful to cultivate their observation ability, imagination ability, expression ability and thinking habits. Furthermore, illustrations are not only playing the role to assist teaching, but also are reflecting the teaching ideas and teaching concepts of educators. Therefore, research on the illustrations in the textbooks is exerting crucial impacts in terms of enriching the connotations of textbooks, improving the quality of textbooks and enhancing the teaching effects, which is also of direct guidance significance as well as of great practical value to the designers of textbooks, the teachers and the students.Since I’m still a young teacher, there is still a long way to go for me in terms of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences. Therefore, the research approach of this paper is majorly by referring to the various domestic and foreign literatures. Meanwhile, with combination of personal teaching practices, this paper has conducted research on the efficiency of illustrations through investigation and case analysis. As discovered from the survey, illustrations are preferred by both teacher and students, but they are not concerned with the functions of the illustrations. As indicated from the previous teaching practices whose emphasis is illustration teaching method, while illustrations can promote students to learn, there are still some shortcomings for illustrations. However, these researches can only be considered as immature teaching experience from me, and hopefully this experience will appeal the attention and the study on illustrations from a wider range of teachers.
