Reading-Based Writing Instructions:Teaching Practical Reading And Writing Skills In Vocational Contexts

A new type of education mode was born which is the teaching combination of high school of senior high school and vocational school, focusing on developing students’ general knowledge and professional skills. With two-year study, students aim at passing the college entrance examination for their target majors at the end of April every year. The newly-designed English textbook has divided each unit into several parts including ’Reading and Writing’. Moreover, more emphasis, especially for practical writing, has been put on writing section in the newly-issued English test programs. However, the sad fact is that though the significance of English writing is clear, it still remains the weakest point in language teaching methods and teaching time in senior high school. Students still have much difficulty in English writing.The puzzling situation makes me focus on the combination of reading and writing and choose it as my research subject, hoping to seek out a useful and effective way of teaching for English practical writing and improve students’ writing ability. The whole research process maybe a good reference for others’ future teaching. During the research I have tried some research methods such as looking up literature, doing investigation and experiments. After a semester’s work, I have found the reading and writing methods can help students gain confidence in English writing and finally improve their writing ability. The test scores before and after this research also prove that reading and writing methods is effective for students’ practical writing. But it is a pity that the research time is limited and the subjects are also confined to one class and one grade, so more work should be done in the future.
