Since its establishment30years ago, the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone has mad e education a top priority and fundamental strategy to boost social and economic progres s. As education facilities improved, more people are well educated and wish to get their c hildren a better education. Extracurricular training (ET) mushroomed accordingly, impact ing on formal schooling. This paper is an empirical study of ET based on students from t hree typical middle schools in Luohu District. Questionnaires and interviews are employe d. Suggestions are also offered to guide people’s choosing ET.The paper adopts questionnaires and interviews to reveal difficulties of ET develop ment and proposes ways to regulate the training while promoting formal schooling. The t hesis consists of six parts:Part one presents the research background,including the reason s, purposes and significance of the research.Part two reviews the concept and forms of E T, factors influencing ET, as well as other relevant literature within and without China. P art three describes the research design, identifying the research subjects, methodology an d procedure. Part four analyzes the status quo of ET based on the questionnaires and inter views.Factors such as training duration, motivation, purpose, subjects and post-ET effect s are examined. Part five offers suggestions on how to regulate ET from the perspectives of complementarity of formal schooling and ET and the right outlook of personnel trainin g. Part six summarizes possible limitations of this paper.
