Education is the foundation of a century-long plan.Education has a decisive influence on a country’s long-term development and international status.Throughout the development of the world,it is found that education is also accompanied by the development of education. So what is the gap between urban and rural compulsory education in China and what are the factors affecting the gap between urban and rural compulsory education in China?Firstly,we construct the Theil index and use the principal component analysis method to calculate the comprehensive score to analyze the present situation of compulsory education in urban and rural areas in China from three aspects: school conditions, teachers’ strength and education investment. The results show that there is a big gap between urban and rural compulsory education in all aspects.Although the gap between urban and rural areas has narrowed year by year as a whole, there is still a certain gap between urban and rural areas in all provinces.Secondly, based on the provincial panel data of 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China from 2006 to 2017,and combined with the newly developed panel smoothing transformation regression model(PSTR),this paper analyzed the influencing factors of the urban-rural gap in compulsory education and its non-linear effect on the urban-rural gap in compulsory education. The research shows that there are significant non-linear characteristics between the factors and the gap between urban and rural compulsory education.Under different per capita GDP,the effects of underdeveloped and developed provinces are also different. The study of the factors influencing the gap between urban and rural areas in compulsory education and its non-linear effects is of great significance for China to promote the construction of urbanization and adjustment of compulsory education layout.
