The research on general education is one of the themes of the current higher educationreform in our country. The general education is also very important for training the medicalpersonnel in the future.With the declining rate of human death cases caused by infectious diseases,cardiovascular, cancer, metabolic diseases have become the main killer of human health. Themedical model has already changed from biological model to biological psychology socialmodel, which has different requirements for the doctor. The doctor should have broadknowledge and a comprehensive understanding of the psychological needs and emotions,which requires medical students to receive general education and have good humanities. Atthe same time, our medical schools have ignored the general education when emphasizingprofessional technical education. The lack of general education creats a lot of seriousproblems, including the serious tension between doctors and patients, kickbacks of doctor, bigprescription and killing doctor events that often appear in the newspapers. In2013, a studentnamed Huang Yang was killed by his roommate in Fudan University Medical School. Theseevents may have a lot of reasons, but the lack of general education may be an important factor.So we must pay attention to the general education in the medical schools.How to improve the students’ comprehensive quality in medical education courses, howto construct the system of general education curriculum in medical colleges, and how tobridge the gap between medical technology and the humanities, the subjects should be thefocus of the reform in medical research. As a general education teacher of the medical college,we must think about the problems.By others’ faults, wise men correct their own. The United States is the most developedcountry in the world. It also has a better general education than other countries. Medicaleducation in the United States is well developed. In this paper, Harvard Medical School, NewYork University School of medicine, University of Michigan Medical College are selected asexamples. This paper describes the situation of general education in the three medicaluniversities. It has made the detailed elaboration from the points of curriculum, teachingmethods, teaching ideas, etc. It summarizes the characteristics of the America medical courses in general education. Among the domestic medical colleges, Fu Jian Medical University andCang Zhou Medical College are selected as examples. At the same time, this paper makes thecomparison between China and America from five aspects. Finally it puts forward somesuggestions.The paper consists of the following parts:The first chapter:The first part introduces the reason why this study was chosen and itssignificance.The first part also makes a literature review and showed the methods of research.The second chapter: The practice of general education in medical colleges of the UnitedStates is introduced. Harvard Medical School, New York University School of Medicine andUniversity of Michigan Medical College are selected as examples. It summarizes severalcharacteristics of medical education in the United States.The third chapter: The present situation of general education in medical colleges in ourcountry is introduced. Fu Jian Medical University and Cang Zhou Medical College areselected as the examples. It makes the comparison between China and America from fiveaspects. Finally, it analyzes the causes of the plight of general education in medicaluniversities and colleges in China.The fourth chapter: The enlightenmen of general education in medical colleges of theUnited States is introduced. Aiming at the existing problems of general education in medicaluniversities and colleges in China, we may absorb the experience of the United States. It putsforward some corresponding suggestions from the macroscopic and microscopic perspective...
