Due to its geopolitical relations and historical humanities, Thailand had a large Chinese population which led to a long history of Chinese teaching and learning. Located in the north of Thailand, Mae Sai County is bordering with Burma and near the Yunnan province of China. Since ancient times, Mae Sai had tied closely with Yunnan in economy and culture. As the most concentrated town of Chinese in north Thailand, Mae Sai carried out Chinese education very early. At present, much investigation on the situation of Chinese teaching and learning in Thailand had been carried out at home and abroad, but the relevant research on Chinese teaching and learning in the special area of Mae Sai County is rare and the specialized research on the Chinese teaching and learning of ethnic Chinese was hardly done.Thus, focused on Chinese teachers and the students in Mae Sai Senior Middle School and Chinese schools nearby, the status of Chinese teaching and learning is surveyed from the aspects of the general condition of schools, Chinese teaching, Chinese learning and the characteristics and problems of Chinese Teaching by questionnaire and on-the-spot investigation during my practice in Mae Sai.It is found that Chinese teaching in Mae Sai had a long history and complex status, no unified syllabus; most of Chinese teachers in Mae Sai were female, the overall education level is relatively low; compared with other regions in Thailand, Chinese teaching and learning in Mae Sai had superiority in geographical location, Chinese tradition culture, but the problems of lack of hardware facilities, teaching resources were also existed; over90percents of the ethnic Chinese students investigated had a very active attitude and strong motivation on Chinese learning; the ethnic Chinese students were good at listening and speaking on Chinese, but their reading and writing ability were poor. Their learning methods were varied. Especially, the pronunciation and grammar are difficult for them because of the great influence of Yunnan dialect.Aiming at the problems of Chinese teaching and learning in Mae Sai, some advices were proposed to improve the Chinese education of ethnic Chinese students in this area, such as developing a unified syllabus and training more Chinese teachers, editing and selecting textbooks based on the learning psychology and Chinese foundation of ethnic Chinese students and increase Chinese culture content in teaching, paying more attention to the teaching of pronounce and grammar, improving the students’language analytic ability, updating the teaching equipments and resource and accelerating the e-teaching. This dissertation can provide reference to the local Chinese teaching and promote the development of Chinese education in Thailand.
