With the high pace of social changes, there is a drastic reform on school curriculum. The development of school-based curriculum starts to be emphasized and becomes one of the slogans of curriculum reform of elementary education.Compared with elementary education, the development of special education falls behind seriously and the curriculums in special education schools need reform accordingly. It is hard for some contents of state curriculums and textbooks in ordinary schools to meet the demands of physical and mental development of mentally challenged children, so it is imperative to promote the overall development of mentally challenged children, build a harmonious campus, and promote the development of school-based curriculum in special education schools. The lower intelligence level of mentally challenged children compared with that of ordinary children, the limitation of their participating in social practice and the lack of life experience affect the healthy development of their personality and the development of their life adaptability. Therefore, the development of school-based curriculum,with life adaptability as its main line, is based on the analysis of inner requirements of mentally challenged children. The ultimate goal is to satisfy the special demands of every mentally challenged child and then to lay a solid foundation for those children to adapt to real life and have an overall development.This thesis, employing an approach of case study, first takes the method of literature review, discussing the literature related to school-based curriculum development and school-based curriculum on life adaptability. Then the thesis,choosing F special education school as the research object, understands and analyzes the current situation and contents of the development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability in special education school using a method of interviewing, observation and text analysis. Meanwhile, the thesis finds the problems and reasons in the development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability of this school. And based on this research, the thesis puts forward some suggestions on further promoting the improvement and development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability of this school.The main findings of this research are as follows. The main problems in the development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability of F school in Lanzhou are: the unclear understanding of the connotations of the development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability in special education school; the lack of sharing of management power on school-based curriculum on life adaptability; the lack of whole devotion of the people involved in; the teachers’ lack of ability to develop school-based curriculum. In light with these problems, this thesis puts forward the conclusions and suggestions on the development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability of special education schools. The main conclusions are as follows. Compared with state curriculum, the most important shining point of the development of school-based curriculum in special education schools is staying close to life and highlighting characteristics. Compared with ordinary curriculums,the most important feature of the development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability of special education schools is to focus on adapting to life and realize the lifelization. The following are main suggestions. The development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability in special education schools should break the fetters of traditional conceptions. And with the strong regional characteristics, the development of school-based curriculum needs to satisfy the objective needs of children, so the school-based curriculum is not suitable to spread and use it in a large scale and we should just use it as a model to learn experience from it. In the process of the development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability, the cooperation of the different people involved and the importance of well-qualified educators on special education should be emphasized. The teachers need to seek the help of experts to improve their ability to develop school-based curriculum. To ensure that the development of school-based curriculum on life adaptability is scientific, the developers of school-based curriculum should note that school-based curriculum on life adaptability have to fully reflects the current life and future life of mentally challenged children, namely, the requirements of career development of mentally challenged children.
