This study is of great practical significance to TEFL in China. In classroom teaching, verbal communication between teachers and students is an important condition to ensure the teaching effectiveness and its main method is the teachers’ questioning and the students’ answering. Equipped with questioning strategies as the basic tool of classroom communication, the English teachers will certainly use questions a lot in every class. However, few of them have seriously asked themselves about the following questions as what the question is, what it is aimed at, how the students answer it, what the answer suggests and how they should respond. Based on the dialogue theory, the study attends to observe the teacher’s questioning and the students’ answering in a high school English class in order to provide data from multiple dimensions. The study concluded the types, functions, features and processes of the teacher’s questioning and the types of the students’ answering. The writer views the questioning and answering in classroom teaching as an organic and interactive whole and aims at helping the teachers improve the content, manner, timing and form of questioning, respond more skillfully to the students’answering and enhance the effectiveness of English classroom teaching.
