Autonomous learning mode is one of the important parts of the learning modes advocated by new curriculum in our country. It can help to improve the students’ learning ability and can pave the way for students to achieve life-long learning. In recent years, in the western rural areas of China, The senior middle students’ autonomous learning ability has improved greatly. But there is still a long distance between the students in the eastern areas. Improving the western rural senior middle students’ autonomous learning ability can improve the quality of education in these areas. More importantly, it can cultivate the talents for the western development.This paper attempts to survey and analysis the students’ autonomous learning ability from the following six aspects: learning motivation, learning method, time management, monitoring the learning process, the feedback of learning and learning environment(including the school environment and family environment), by organizing the literature making questionnaire. The study randomly selected 320 students as questionnaire from L school, fifty boys and fifty girls each grade. The effective questionnaire is 300.The study found that the way of the western rural students’ learning has changed greatly since the new curriculum reform implemented. The students’ autonomous learning ability has been improved greatly. Firstly, the way of autonomous learning has been accepted by teachers. Secondly, autonomous learning has been greatly valued by students. Thirdly, autonomous learning has played a positive role on the students’ studying. Fourthly, the students’ ability of autonomous learning has been gradually improved.Whereas the study also found that there are still many problems on the students’ autonomous learning mode. Firstly, the school’ problems. Secondly, the teachers’ problems. Thirdly, the students’ problems. Then the study puts forward the following measures and suggestions according to these problems. Firstly, the school’s management system should focus on the students and improve the conditions of the school. Secondly, enable the teachers to improve their quality and to change theirtraditional teaching methods. Thirdly, try to enhance the students’ learning motivation and strengthen the guidance of the students’ learning methods.
