At present, China’s social work is in the state of booming, but the actual personnel turnover rate is very high, far failed to meet the social demand for professional social work services. At the same time, the huge people with intellectual disabilities is lack of appropriate services and training to meet the needs of groups themselves and their families. Therefore, the attention to the professional identity of social workers, especially one of the few social workers in the field of intellectual disability services, has an important and far-reaching impact in the development of China in the field of intellectual disability services.In this paper, the author uses qualitative research methods to conduct in-depth interviews with 8 social workers from HuiLing Service (Hangzhou, Beijing), analyze their career choices and the status of professional identity, and try to find the factors that influence their professional identity which includes gender, career motivation, human relations, work environment, training system, cultural institutions, institutional maturity, family support, Government support and social support and other factors.Based on the investigation, the author find that professional identity building process of workers with intellectual disabilities service presents features, namely with the growth of social workers working hours, more prone to acceptance of clients; there is a serious gender differences; more training and growth opportunities directly contribute to enhance the professional identity. Author also find some problems in this progress, such as lower wages, lack of social support and the low degree of specialization.With regards to this, the author based on the findings proposes specific comments in three areas from the institution itself, government policy and social advocacy, to promote the professional identity of practitioners in the field of intellectual disability services, then on this basis can retain and expand the few social workers already in the field of intellectual disability services.
