Physics is a subject based on experiment. Some concepts, principles, and rules of physics are established on the basis of experiment. The new physics curriculum standard attaches importance to the application of information technology in physics experiment. The virtual laboratory, as the product of information technology and curriculum integration, is getting more and more attention in physics teaching. How to use the environment provided by the virtual laboratory to carry on the inquiry teaching and cultivate the students’ ability of scientific inquiry? What is the effectiveness of inquiry teaching of the physics in the middle school based on the virtual laboratory? which are the problems worth studying and thinking. This study attempts to apply the virtual laboratory to inquiry teaching of the physics in the middle school. And the study put the cases based on teaching method of exploration into teaching practice, verify the teaching effect and provide valuable experience for future research. The study consists of five parts:The first part introduced the research background, research significance, and research design.The second part, mainly through literature research method, Firstly, it summarized the connotation of inquiry teaching and then introduced the type, research and development of virtual laboratory, and research status of virtual laboratory teaching application at home. It focused on analyzing and summarizing the application mode and principle of virtual laboratory in middle school physics teaching.The third part is the study of inquiry teaching method of virtual laboratory in middle school physics teaching. Introduced the important points of inquiry task design, inquiry process design and inquiry evaluation design of middle school physics teaching based on virtual laboratory. According to the points from the three aspects, the study designed the inquiry teaching cases of middle school physics based on virtual laboratory.In the fourth part, the study put the inquiry teaching cases into classroom teaching. Through classroom observation and interviews, it investigated application effect of physics inquiry teaching in the middle school based on virtual laboratory. Investigation shows that:(1) Students’ learning interest is very high. Their sense of inquiry, cooperation and experiment ability have been promoted through the experiment. It shows that early exploration teaching method achieved better teaching effect.(2) Students couldn’t use the virtual laboratory to explore very skillfully during the group cooperative inquiry process. Before the inquiry, teachers should train the students to use the software until they master the basic skills of the operation of virtual laboratory.(3)In the group cooperative inquiry process, there is still a “free ride” phenomenon.(4) Teachers’ guidance and help is a key factor for students to complete the inquiry tasks successfully.(5) After the inquiry, students don’t value the teaching evaluation generally.The fifth part is the research summary. The paper summarized the conclusions of this research, pointed out the deficiency and looked forward to the further research.
