Close reading was originally a semantics criticism, later used in language teaching, and has become a way of interpretation of the text for the teaching of reading services. In the case of Chinese language teaching courses close reading stresses the focus on microscopic part of the text as well as the comprehensive understanding of the text, merging the analysis of both level. High School classical Chinese teaching is characterized by focuses of inheriting culture, of students’ language literacy, and of close reading of the text and so forth. Applying close reading to classical Chinese teaching in high school could contribute to the unity of the classical Chinese understanding, the improvement of teachers’ interpretation of the text, and the enhancement of students’ classical Chinese text proficiency and language literacy. The requirements of high school classical Chinese teaching which are based on close reading theory contains understanding of close reading and mastering its methods; focusing on the contents to close read based on the text;helping students enjoy the close reading experience.Starting from the requirements of high school classical Chinese teaching, we conducted questionnaire in high school and found out that the main problems are as follows: Firstly, the students recognized the importance of close reading to classical Chinese understanding, but their comprehension of related theories was unclear.Secondly, teachers whose teaching methodology was limited and outdated did not have a good command of close reading methods. Thirdly, when preparing the course contents teachers had not employed adequate close reading theory. Teachers’ and students’ opinions varied when it came to the importance of close reading, while some teachers lacked close reading methodology students could not make the most of that.The teachers’ evaluation of classical Chinese close reading teaching was way too simple. The main reasons could boil down to the pressure of test-oriented education,the disadvantage of Chinese language teachers’ close reading ability, and the inadequate curriculum reform.As for the problems underlining high school classical Chinese close reading teaching, we suggest to tackle them by the following strategies: First, it should be put into practice to teach classical Chinese close reading in high school. Second, teachersought to explore a depth study of teaching contents of classical Chinese close reading.Last, Chinese language teachers should summarize and innovate classical Chinese close reaching methodologies in high school.
