China music school education is an important component in the history of musical education, which has a long historical standing and is highly evaluated in research. In the research of music education history, there are few research papers about the local and regional history. This paper mainly makes research on music education in the primary and middle schools which fills in the vacancy of Xuzhou’s music history research.Based on the period from the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, we divide the development of Xuzhou’s music education in schools into four periods: the first period is from 1949, the foundation of PRC to 1965, the year before the cultural revolution; the second one is from 1966 to 1976, the decade of the cultural revolution;the third from 1977(the beginning of the opening and reforms) to 2000 and the fourth from 2001 to 2010.There are five chapters in this paper. There are the following:The first chapter is the introduction which mainly introduces the background, the overseas and domestic research status, and the meanings and the creation of the topic.The second chapter discusses the reforms and development from 1949 to 1976,starting from the foundation of new China to the Cultural Revolution. In the decades,music education in the primary and middle schools was badly influenced by the poor economic basis and the national policy. in addition to the lack of teachers, the schooling music education developed slowly, even in standstill status. Till 1966, the Cultural Revolution broke the teaching orders and directly affected the carry-out of music teaching. However, after-class music education developed well and made a good foundation for the future.Chapter three discusses the development from the opening and reforms to the ending of the 20 th century. In the decades, music education in the primary and middle schools was revalued and put into the national documents. The committee rewrote the teaching program, the after-class activities grew fast and more high-quality teachers contributed to the music education.Chapter four is mainly focus on the growing of the last 10 years since 21 st century.With the fast-spreading of quality-oriented education, school music education is put into a high position in the new curriculum standard.The last chapter is the conclusion of the 60-year history of Xuzhou’s school musiceducation. In this chapter, we summarize the main factors to music education in schools and come up with our own ideas and suggestions. Meanwhile, we make some predictions to the future development trend and direction for the inference.
