As one of the three elements of the English language, English grammar is the basis of English lear ning for students. However, how we English teachers help English learners obtain grammar knowledge effectively is a problem that a large number of English teachers have been probing into for a long time. At presen t, at home and abroad, there are many relevant researches about th e model of instruction, known as “guided learning plan”; plus, it is being widely practiced in many senior high schools in China. Nevertheless, large quantities of senior high school teachers, according to their teachi ng practice, have summarized detailed ways and strategies about grammar teaching, but they often lack the basis of the the ory. Under the background, this research has m ainly tried to explore two specific questions:(1) How can the English gramma r teaching approach under the model of instruction, known as “guide d learning plan”, help improve the senior high school students’ interest in English grammar learning better, compared with the traditional English grammar teaching approach?(2) How can it prom ote the senior high school students’ English grammar proficiency and ability better, compared with the traditional English grammar teaching approach?Under the fram ework of Humanism, and in the li ght of The New National Curriculum Standards of English(2004) and the actual situation of Senior English grammar learning and teaching, the author of the thesis has conducted an experim ent in English grammar teaching with the cooperation of the students from Class 402 and Class 404 in Grade 2 of a Senior High School in Hengyang. Du ring the experiment, the “gui ded learning plan” of the Senior High Engl ish grammar and the classroom practice were used in the experiment al class while the traditional English grammar teaching approach was adopted in the controlled class, using the former teaching ways. The research lasted about one year(from the beginning of Septem ber 2013 to the end of June, 2014). W e did the English grammar study systematically by the means of questionnaire, the contrast of teaching and lear ning experiment and inte rview, and then analyzed the collected data with SPSS19.0.The result of the study shows that the students in the experimental class, after receiving the English grammar teachi ng approach under the model of instruction, known as “gui ded learning plan”, for one year, showed obviously m ore interest in English gra mmar learning than the students in the controlled class; on the other hand, they got higher grades in the post test on English grammar and language skills than the students in the controlled class. It reveal s that co mpared with the traditional English grammar teaching approach, the English grammar teaching approach under the model of instruction, known as “guided learning plan”, can stimulate and stir up the senior high school students’ interest in English grammar learning better, and can promote the senior high school students’ English grammar proficiency and ability better as well.
