The multiple intelligence theory makes an overall and systematic exposition for the linguistic intelligence which refers to the ability of individuals to skillfully use a certain language in both written and spoken form. That is the ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The external outcome of this ability is that individuals can proficiently take advantage of the language to express their ideas, describe things and communicate with others. The multiple intelligence theory emphasizes students as the core and pays attention to developing their various kinds of intelligence. There is much in this theory that teachers can make use of in order to deepen the English teaching reform in junior high school and improve the English grammar teaching. This study conducts a questionnaire survey in a junior school and analyzes the current situation of its English grammar teaching. Through the analysis, this thesis discloses the main issues existing in teaching English grammar in middle school where the English teachers usually concentrate on explaining while teaching the grammar, and spending most of the time explaining and practicing the grammar rules. However, they seldom create opportunities for the students to practice the language in class. What is worse, they do not pay enough attention to cultivating the students’ ability in using the language. Based on this, the present researcher tries to apply the multiple intelligence theory into the English grammar teaching and selects Class 3 as the experimental class and Class 4 as the control class. Through pre-test, it is found there are not great differences between these two classes in grades. However, after the new teaching method employed, the experimental class is obviously better than the control class in the post-test. Thus this study draws the conclusion that the application of the multiple intelligence theory into the English grammar teaching plays an important role in improving the students’ grammar proficiency.
