The Social Work Intervention In The Ascension Of Urban Elderly Volunteer’s Service Ability

The fact that our country is entering an aging society at present help promote the development of the elderly volunteer service. Encouraging and supporting the elderly people to participate in the volunteer service, which as an important way to implement active aging, will not only help their self-development, but also make for the rational allocation of social resources. Now our country has initially formed the trend of participation of the urban elderly people in voluntary service and the academia has universally turned their attention to its positive influence on active aging. However, there are few studies paying attention to the practical difficulties in the elderly volunteer service and the lack of abilities of elderly volunteers. This paper will focus on the participation of community service and service abilities of the urban elderly volunteers, hoping to solve subsistent problems by means of social work intervention and improve the service abilities of the urban elderly volunteers.With the methods of questionnaires and interviews, the paper investigates the current situation of participation of community services of the elderly volunteers in Wuxi Yingyue Community from the aspects of their willingness, feelings and service content of elderly volunteer service. And on this basis, the paper also explores the participation motivation of the elderly, their understanding of communication during volunteer service and the situation of volunteer service training. The survey finds that the lack of community service ability of the elderly volunteers in this community mainly lies in the singleness of service ideas and lack of communication skills.Combined with the research purpose and specific actual situation of elderly volunteers in Yingyue community, this study decided to adopt the method that case work intervenes into the ability enhancement of urban elderly volunteers in community service, and chose uncle Li——a typical elderly volunteer, as a director. To solve the problems that uncle Li has no comprehensive understanding of volunteer service, which leads to his simple motivation and lack of communication skills during service, this study chose task-centered model on the basis of the theory of cognitive behavior and communication analysis theory, and then conducted social work intervention. Through the investigation of the objects of elderly volunteer service and interviews of the director and his family and observation of social workers before and after social work, this study found that uncle Li’s autognosis of the goal of volunteer service and communication skills during volunteer service have improved, and social work intervention has achieved the expected goal.On the basis of investigation of service ability of the urban community elderly volunteers and case work’s intervention into the ability enhancement of urban elderly volunteers in community service, this study introspect from the perspective of social workers, community elderly volunteers and the society. At first, for the lack of service ability of urban community elderly volunteers, social work intervention is feasible; Secondly, in the process of intervention, social workers need to get understanding and support of community residents committee, community residents, and the elderly volunteer’s families to maximize the effect of intervention; In addition, the task-centered model adopted in this study is applicable for the director, but the effectiveness of ability enhancement of other elderly volunteers remains to be seen. In conclusion, this study explores the method of ability enhancement of the urban elderly volunteers and provides empirical experience for better participation in volunteer service.
