The human geography plays an important part in the instruction of senior high school education. It’s necessary for geography teachers to do well in this section. With the development of computer technology, a variety of technological means can be used in the teaching, especially the GIS which is regional, intuitive, dynamic and suitable for geography teaching. In addition, GIS has been brought into the curriculum system according to Geography Curriculum Criteria of Full-Time Ordinary Senior High School. Therefore, GIS is not only one of the most necessary learning contents of students but also an important teaching method of teachers. The application of GIS in the teaching of human geography is conducive to the variety of instructional theory and teaching methods as well as the generalization of database, which is very valuable for high school teachers to improve teaching level and efficiency.We take the GIS used in the teaching of human geography for example, and study its feasibility and drawback from the aspects of theory and practice. We study the present situation of GIS used in the teaching of human geography at home and abroad through literature reading. We’ve theoretically confirmed the feasibility between the application of GIS and the teaching of human geography by analyzing the features of human geography, the teaching of human geography, GIS and the application of GIS. We’ve also compared the traditional teaching mode with the GIS mode to make some certain tests, get the experimental data and verify the data by questionnaire survey and case analysis.The main problems of the applications of GIS in teaching lie in students’computer level, teachers’ operant level, the slight differences in view effects and the teaching efficiency between GIS teaching and traditional teaching. However, there are three fundamental principles of GIS teaching that are intuition, comprehensiveness and instantaneity and there are four display methods that are visual display of data, synthetic display,correlated display and inquiry display, which is conducive to the application of GIS used in the teaching of human geography as well as its teaching efficiency.The thesis is composed of five parts including introduction and conclusion. Part one gives a summarized account to the research background, previous studies on GIS in China and abroad and research objectives, methods and mentality. Part two, part three and part four serve as the three major parts of the thesis. Part two offers studies on the content and teaching features of human geography as well as the application features of GIS used in the teaching of human geography. Part three provides background investigation on some certain teaching cases and process planning. Part four represents the advantages and disadvantages of GIS used in the teaching of human geography by analyzing the experimental results. Part five is the conclusion that summarizes the main points of the whole thesis.
