As a diverse teach ing method, cooperative learning provides studen ts with opportunities to work together in learning and academic task completion. At present, the new curriculum reform clearly puts forw ard to cultivate students’ awareness of cooperation and develop students’ cooperative ability. Among various cooperative methods, Jigsaw method, one of practical and efficient methods, pays more attention to communication and cooperation and focus on students’ interdependence, establishing harmonious atmosphere of learning.At present, dom estic junior high school English teachi ng places great em phasis on reading. The application of Jigsaw m ethod in this educational field can not only mobilize students’ independent learning aw areness, but also increase their confidence as well a s the sense of responsibility and team spirits. In this way, students’ reading proficiency shall consequently be improved. Firstly, this thesis puts forward a novel student-oriented teaching method. Secondly, it analyzes the experimental consequences of Jigsaw method in junior high school English reading class. It is proved that Jigsaw method can elevate students’ reading competence and motivate their learning interests in an effective way. Ultimately, it will make a summary on the research and simultaneously put forward feasible suggestions for teachers.The subjects of the research are two classes from No.11 middle school of Shi Jiazhuang. The English level of the two classes is of similarity. Each class includes 50 students. They are in Grade 8. One class is selected as the experim ental class under the application of Jigsaw method to reading teaching, the other one is chosen to be the control class instructed under the traditional reading teaching method. The instruments of questionnaires, pre-test, post-test and interview are utilized. Data ana lysis is based on Statistical Package for the Social Sciences(19.0), short for SPSS st atistical software. The questionnaires and interviews are adopted to testify whether there is significance change on students’ interest to English reading. The tests are adopted to test the students whether their English reading ability is improved or not. The research findings show that Jigsaw method has a positive effect on students’ interests towards English reading and Jigsaw teachin g method is an effectual practice on improving students’ reading ability.
