| English reading,as one of important means of language input,is an approach to obtaining information.Reading motivation performs an essential part in English teaching and learning.Thus the teaching of English reading should put more emphasis on stimulating as well as cultivating learners’ reading interest and motivation.But traditional English reading teaching method over-emphasized the explanation and learners’ mastery of vocabulary as well as grammar,which leads to most senior high school students lack certain motivation and interest in English reading,and makes them feel that they are forced to learn by exams,teachers or parents.Jigsaw,as a cooperative learning technique,has been applied to teaching for many years and its effects have been proved by some teaching practitioners.Therefore,this paper tries to improve senior high school students’ English reading motivation by using jigsaw teaching technique.Three research questions are involved in this study:1.What is the status quo of senior high school students’ English readingmotivation?2.Is there a significant difference of the students’ reading motivation between before and after applying jigsaw method to English reading class?3.What characteristics of jigsaw method are appreciated by students? And what is the relationship between these characteristics and reading motivation?To answer the three questions,questionnaire and interview are applied to this study.The data is collected from 50 senior two students of a middle school in Chengdu.And then software SPSS is used to calculate and analyze data.The final results show that senior high school students’ motivation to English reading is relatively weak,especially for their intrinsic value of reading,and their motivation in English reading needs to be improved further.What’s more,the study also shows that the jigsaw teaching model has certain positive effect on learners’ English reading motivation,especially for their intrinsic value of reading.In addition,through interview after experiment,it is found that the relaxing and interesting learning environment,the peers’ influence,mutual help and communication among peers,and divided reading material in jigsaw reading class are appreciated by students.And according to Day and Bamford’s model of major variables of motivating students’ reading motivation,it is found that these characteristics have certain positive effect on students’ reading motivation.Finally,the author presents some advice.First,teachers are expected to stimulate learners’ motivation,interest in learning,and give proper encouragement according to students’ personal differences,making them experience the sense of achievements Second,for carrying out jigsaw activity in English reading class,teachers are expected to pay more attention to the following points: the first one is making full preparation before class.And then is grouping students appropriately.Followed by is paying attention to the guidance and monitor in its process.The last one is establishing reasonable evaluation mechanism... |
