In order to see how strength exercises in PE class affect the mentality of senior high school students, this research mainly used these methods:literature review, survey, experimental methodology and statistical analysis. This research selected 101 first year male students from Shanghai Northern High School. The students were randomly divided into three groups, low-strength group (N=29), medium-strength group (N=34) and high loaded group (N=38), respectively. The experiment lasted for 16 weeks, three times per week, each being conducted in the last 15 minutes of the PE class. All students from different groups were then tested on their physical strength and their mentality standard based on POMS test, both before and after the experiment. Afterwards using the variance method, the data were used to analyze how strength training affected the students’mentality both inter-group, and intra-group. The goal was to explore the ideal amount of strength training for the optimum mentality for high school students, further establish the foundations for the mental development of teenage students.Results:1. After the strength training during the last 15minutes of PE class, three times a week, for 16 weeks. Low-strength group showed no significant difference before and after the experiment on the mentality (T=0.34, P=0.73).2. Medium and high-strength groups did have significant impact on the mentality after the experiment. (Medium-strength group:T=3.85, P=0.00; High-strength group: T=-5.87, P=0.00)3. Medium-strength group affected the mentality positively after the experiment (T=5.92, P=0.00),4. High-strength group had a significant impact on both positive and negative mentalities. (Positive:T=2.84, P=0.01; Negative emotion:T=-6.02、P=0.01)Conclusions:1. After 16 weeks of strength training, medium-strength training has a superior effect over low and high-strength training on the mentality of male first year high school students, this confirmed with the idea brought by Biyang Jiang and Peili Zhu.2. Medium-strength training has a positive effect on male first year high school students, mainly on their anger, fatigue, depression and anxiety.3. After 16 weeks of strength training, low-strength training has little effect on both physical strength and mentality improvement of male first year high school students. High-strength training shows TMD of male first year high school students is positively proportionate to their negative emotions, thus showing a negative effect on their mentality.
