In big data era, the channels for student accessing information are much more increased than ever. Except the influence from family and school education, the society also delivers increasing influence on the physical and mental development of the students. In the curriculum reform, experts and scholars lay great emphasis on mental health education of students and embed it into the formulation of curriculum standard for specific discipline. In recent years, art, due to its capability of expressing various nonverbal meanings and certain therapy effect, is increasingly used in psychological counseling, which gradually gives birth to art therapy- a new interdiscipline of art and psychology. Moreover, many scholars have explored the feasibility of combination of art therapy and art education, and put it into practice.This paper tries to combine art therapy and art education, then integrates such concept into common primary school art teaching, aiming at delivering positive influence on the metal health of students, helping them cultivate sound personality when learning knowledge and developing abilities. By literature review of related works and thesis of masters and doctors, the author defines the concepts of art therapy and art education. The research object has been determined with study of the status quo of the integration of art therapy and art education. This paper has studies the requirement on physical and mental health development in primary education in China based on related documents and thus to provide theoretic basis for the research.A survey on senior grade pupils has been conducted in the primary school which the author had internship in to understand the influence of art education on the mental health of senior grade pupils, and a questionnaire is used to study the self-consciousness development of senior grade pupils. With combining the results of the above survey, the author has designed and executed primary school art teaching activities themed “My dream”, “Painting your emotion” and “Ideal city” which are integrated with art therapy concept and backed by related theories of children painting phases and principles proposed by Professor Lu Yaqing regarding the design and teaching of courses, in order to address the prominent problems of fifth year pupils in the primary school in which the author had internship. The effects of these teaching activities on pupils in self-awareness, emotional catharsis and interpersonal relationship have been verified. After the teaching activities, another questionnaire survey has been conducted to the respondents to verify the effectiveness of combination of art therapy concept and primary art teaching, thus to provide useful reference and experience for implementing art teaching with art therapy concept in primary schools in China.
