In senior high school, the importance of English reading ability is shown in the proportion it takes in the college entrance examination paper. However, due to the pressure of the college entrance examination, English reading teaching class in senior high school is still influenced by the traditional teacher-centered method, which leads to the fact that students’ reading proficiency is far from satisfactory. Therefore, it is essential to find an effective teaching model which is student-centered to enhance students’ English reading proficiency. This thesis adopts a new teaching model, that is the guided learning plan teaching model, which combines “learning plan” and “guided learning” together. This study tries to prove the feasibility and positive effects of this new teaching model. Based on the Constructive learning theory, Humanistic theory, Cognitive learning theory and Zone of Proximal Development, this study tries to answer to following questions:1. Is the guided learning plan teaching model superior to the traditional teaching model in promoting students’ learning autonomy in English reading?2. Is the guided learning plan teaching model more effective than the traditional teaching model in improving students’ English proficiency? In order to find answers to the above questions, a one-semester study was carried out in Ningcheng Senior High School in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia from September 2015 to January 2016. The participants were 83 students randomly selected from two parallel classes of Grade Two. The two classes were taught by the same English teacher with the same textbook and the same class hours to ensure the reliability and validity of the research. The only difference was that the experimental class was taught with the guided learning plan teaching model while the control class was taught with the traditional teaching method. In this research, test, questionnaire and interview were employed as the instruments. The data from tests and questionnaires were processed by the software SPSS 11.5.According to the results, the study came to the conclusion that the guided learning plan teaching model is not only more effective than the traditional teaching method in improving students’ reading proficiency but also in enhancing their learning autonomy in English reading.
