College years are a key period for the individual students, and the training of the students’ ability of social adaptation is a must during the education process. On one hand, students in an independent college have many common features with the modern college students, while on the other hand, they have certain unique characteristics, such as passivity in learning, low ability of self-management, low self-esteem, and higher pressure in seeking occupations. What’s more, they also have extremely poor performance in their social adaptations, which also need further enhancement and improvement. It has been proved that expanding trainings are beneficial to students’ adaptability to the society.Expanding training is a comprehensive course that emphasizes the overall development of the student. This course integrates knowledge and teaching contents of many different fields, such as education, psychology, physical science, outdoor exercises and self-saving in emergencies, etc. Different colleges have differences in their emphasis and teaching contents.Students’ adaptation to the college includes adapting to the living conditions, learning environment, and interpersonal relationships, and then finding the connecting point between college and society. This paper studies the ability of social adaptation among students, covering all kinds of abilities in college life. Expanding training covered in P.E. classes is a response to the social need and trend of improving students’ overall quality. Methods of documents, interview, experiments and data statistics are adopted in this research and 120 students enrolled in 2014 are taken as its subjects, including 60 students(30males and 30 females) as the expanding training experimental group, and the other 60(32 males and 28 females) who take part in school activities normally as the control group. Different research methods are used here including literature review, interview and experiments. Different abilities of social adaptation are uncovered by using the Reference Table of Social Adaptability. By using the control sample T to crosscheck and analyze the initial data, the following results are concluded.(1)After a semester’s experiment and teaching, the expanding training group, compared with the control group, has obviously improved their interpersonal skills, self-management, capability of implementing orders which are most outstanding and their willingness in express themselves(2) According to the results of the teaching experience, there are significant differences among the five dimensions of the social adaption ability of students in the experimental group. The five dimensions include interpersonal communication, life-independent, adoption to culture environment, obedience ability and self-expression. The T value are 0.156、1.417、1.790、2.799、0.715 and the P value are 0.047、0.012、0.079、0.007、0.032 respectively.(3) Comparative experiments showed that expanding training could significantly improve students’ ability to adapt to society, while those students who take part in school activities were much more improved in the sporting skills and the involvement..
