High School English Curriculum Standards was promulgated by the ministry of education in 2003 indicated: In order to implement the ideology of curriculum reform roundly, senior high schools in China must adopt a curriculum settings mode that is combine the compulsory courses with the optional courses adequately; meanwhile, it enhances the position of English optional courses even makes it into College Entrance Examination System policy. With the development of the new curriculum reform, the importance of English optional courses in high schools not only has been emphasized by some national guidance documents but also has proposed the purpose of the course is to satisfy employment and further education even students individual interests and development. Therefore, bases on the previous study of English optional courses in research and theory, the author intends to do a practical research according to the English optional courses development in minority areas.This research will take study case of Tongren No.1 senior high school in Guizhou province and adopt questionnaire method, interview method, research literature method and observation method in order to find problems dialectically, the author will focus on two aspects: The historical investigation research intend to find problems according to the curriculum settings, the implementation, the types and the evaluation of English optional courses and lay foundation for further investigation research bases on its assessment in the targeted school by investigating some teachers, the school managers, and some students; The current investigation research, which is based on the foundation of history investigation to describe development in curriculum settings, implementation and evaluation. According to the two aspects, the author will investigate the causes and put forward some practical suggestions.Through the investigation and study, it is found that the quantity of English optional courses is sufficient, but the category is imbalanced; In the aspect of curriculum implementation(according to teaching aims, contents, methods, aids, management and evaluation)find: teaching methods are unbalanced caused it cannot integrate minority resources and cultures into optional courses; And especially in curriculum evaluation, many students had the urgent needs of many English optional courses and the teachers’ corresponding guidance to their courses, but the majority of the teachers, students even their parents ignore the English optional courses.According to the investigation and study, I’ll stand on the reality, not only strive for putting forward advice(about the optional courses’ characteristic development, curriculum implementation and evaluation) according to English optional curriculum settings and development in the same type of ethnic minority areas of senior high schools but also devote myself to researching and practicing of English optional course.
