The Reform of New Curriculum focuses on transforming the traditional teacher-oriented learning and teaching method to student-centered method. It also emphasizes on the importance of developing students’ innovative thinking and exploration. According to the Reform, the real learning ability is not generated from textbooks only.In order to encourage explorative learning in high school chemistry, teacher-guided explorative learning activities are implemented, through which students gain real-life experience in the process of scientific study. However, explorative study in China is still in its infancy. The key to promote explorative study within the current College Entrance Exam system is to conduct explorative study in an efficient way: to guarantee the progress of the Reform while ensuring the effectiveness of students’ learning activities. The article, first of all, introduces the background, purposes and significance of explorative study in China and abroad. It then discusses the meaning, theoretical foundation and characteristics of explorative study. A survey with questionnaires is conducted among high school students in chemistry classes in Harbin and followed by an interview. The study shows positive impact that explorative study has over students’ chemistry grade and learning ability. It also encounters some difficulties in changing the traditional teaching methods, the pressure of College Entrance Exam, the limited knowledge level of teachers, organizing the explorative learning activities, the imbalance of students’ learning abilities as well as the immature evaluation system.Based on the survey and analysis, proposals on how to conduct explorative study in chemistry in Harbin high schools have been made, for instance, case study design and analysis on certain chapters in the chemistry textbooks, challenges and issues in explorative teaching in high school chemistry, suggestions for students on how tobalance the traditional learning and explorative learning as well as how teachers should implement explorative activities in the classroom.
