Geography teachers play a leading role in geography teaching development. Under the situation of new curriculum reform and new college entrance examination reform, it has important significance to research on the professional core competence diagnosis of geography teachers. In the part of theoretical discussion, this paper defines the meaning of geography teacher professional core ability diagnosis from the etymological perspective, clarifies its theoretical basis by means of literature analysis, explains the direct basis for geography teacher professional core ability diagnosis is geography curriculum standards and teacher professional standards.In the part of method research, this paper constructs the method system of geography teachers’ professional core competence diagnosis from the four aspects of diagnostic purposes, content, principles and methods. The ultimate goal of geography teacher professional core ability diagnosis is to improve geography teachers’professional core competence and overall quality, improve the overall quality of geography teachers, promote the development of geography education. Diagnostic content includes geography teaching design ability, geography teaching implement ability and geography teaching evaluation ability. These three abilities constitute the organic whole of the professional core competence, the design ability is the foundation, the implementation ability is the key, the evaluation ability is the guarantee. Geography teachers’ professional core competence diagnosis should follow the principles of geography, pertinence, development and science; should select appropriate diagnostic methods according to the purpose and content of the diagnosis.In the part of practice verification, this paper takes the diagnosis of novice junior middle school geography teachers’ teaching implementation ability as an example. Firstly, this paper determines the weight of diagnosis index,designs diagnostic criteria and diagnostic records by the expert consultation method;secondly, explains specific implementation procedure of geography teacher professional core ability diagnosis through observation and survey method. Diagnosis results show that, the level of novice junior middle school geography teachers’ teaching implementation ability should be improved; It is not only the objective demand of geography teaching practice to strengthen training of teaching objectives implementing ability, teaching resources development ability and teaching evaluation ability training, but also the subjective demand of geography teachers. There are some general problems in the development of novice junior middle school geography teachers’ teaching ability, including the implementation of geography teaching objectives are not in place; geography teaching resources away from students; neglecting students’ learning, teachers dominate the classroom; ignore the use of traditional geography teaching media; geography teaching evaluation is too simple.In order to improve the level of geography teachers’ professional core competence, realize effective geography teaching, some feasible strategies are put forward in this paper:teaching diagnosis as a means, combining self diagnosis and peer diagnosis, build ability development platform; take solving the problem of geography teaching as the goal, take targeted measures to make up for deficiencies, to ensure the ability development quality; continuing Education as a means, enhance the height of ability development through participating in training, independent study, carrying out research and other means; geographical core literacy cultivation as a point, reflect the geographical core literacy education concept in the teaching design, fulfill the task of geographic core literacy cultivation in the teaching practice,construct the evaluation system of geographical core literacy in the teaching evaluation, increase the depth of the development of capacity.
