Quality oriented education requires a higher standard of English teaching, in which students should understand essential English knowledge, acquire fundamental English language skills and cultivate comprehensive abilities such as innovative ability, problem-solving ability and comprehensive English application ability. Many researchers and scholars started to study the English extracurricular activities that are proved to be beneficial to students’self-development and academic outcomes.The author adopts the Constructivism Theory and Whole Language Learning outlook as the theoretical foundation, and studies the current status of the English Extracurricular Activities in Xinzhou No.2 Middle School - an suburban high school in Wuhan by using questionnaires, then interviews teachers’and students’ perception of the English Extracurricular Activities. By analyzing the questionnaire and interview data, revealing the deficiencies of the English Extracurricular Activities practice at the school, and then analyzing the factors that affect the implementation of the school’s English extracurricular activities, the author eventually puts forward some practical suggestions for providing a reference to the practice of the English extracurricular activities in the region.This paper researches with questionnaire and interviews. Firstly, the author interviewed the teachers about all the forms of the English Extracurricular Activities, then made questionnaires according to related literature, and randomly chose two classes from three grades respectively, and a total of 180 questionnaires were issued to the six classes. The contents have five aspects including the organization of the practice of the English Extracurricular Activities, students’ preferences for the forms, richness degree of the activities, students’interest degree to the activities and the effect of the practice. The author then interviewed 4 English teachers and 4 students chosen randomly about their perception of the English Extracurricular Activities. The author interviewed with teachers about four aspects including function of the English Extracurricular Activities, teachers’ roles, the relationship between the classroom teaching and the English Extracurricular Activities, as well as the factors that influencing the English Extracurricular Activities. The interview with students is supplement for the last four aspects of the questionnaire, including the forms and function of ECA and the relationship between classroom teaching and ECA.By analyzing the data of questionnaire and interviews, we figured out some deficient aspects such as the forms of the English Extracurricular Activities are single, students prefer activities related to listening and reading, subjectivity of students in the practical activities are not developed sufficiently, lacking of teachers’professionalguidance, practical effect is poor, lacking of knowledge of teachers’roles in the activities, lacking of understanding of the relationship between classroom teaching and the ECA and second class for teachers and students. Besides, the author summarized the factors affecting the English Extracurricular Activities according to the data including: lacking of activity resources and activity equipment, lacking of systematic management system and related organizations, insufficient experience of teachers, inadequate capabilities of students, limitations of recognition degree of school leaders, and families, etc. Eventually, put forward four recommendations:promoting the diversification of teachers’ roles in the English extracurricular activities, deeply understanding of the relationship between classroom teaching and the English Extracurricular Activities, improving the management system and organizations of the English Extracurricular Activities, and making full use of network.This paper studies the current status of the English Extracurricular Activities in Xinzhou No.2 Middle School with questionnaire and interviews. By revealing the deficiency of practice of the English Extracurricular Activities, analyzing the affecting factors, and putting forward recommendations, this paper is expected to provide a reference to the implementation of the English Extracurricular Activities for the suburban senior high schools in Wuhan.
