University motto reflects the university ideals and the talent-cultivating aim, coheres the university core values and leads all the teachers’and students’ behaviors. But nowadays, the awareness and charisma of university motto among the society and teachers and students are low, which affect the education function of university motto. This study is designed to investigate the college students’acknowledge status quo to their own university motto, and to give analysis to the reason of the influences of the college students’ understanding on their own university motto, besides, also gives related suggestions based on the researched results.This dissertation adopts quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the college students’ understanding on their own university motto and its influence factors. This study explores the college students’understanding on their own university motto on three aspects:cultural cognition,psychological cognition and education cognitive, besides, based on the existing research results, this study classifies the factors that influence college students’cognition on university motto as the internal and external factors. The internal factors include gender, grade, subject, school level, students political landscape, learning attitude and personal interest. The external factors include school factors, social factors, and social spread factors.By the analysis of descriptive statistics and regression analysis, following research conclusions can be obtained:Firstly, it is concluded that the overall understanding of college students on university motto is low. Specifically,their cultural cognition and education cognition on the motto are relatively lower, and the psychological cognition is higher. It shows that college students have high satisfaction on the university motto, but they don’t put enough efforts in understanding cultural meaning and exercising the motto.Secondly, college students’cognition on university motto varies by gender, grade, subject, school level, learning attitude and personal interest. However, there is no significant differences among different political backgrounds and in the perspective if he or she is an only child in family.Thirdly, by the research methods of questionnaire and interview to analyze factors, it is concluded these factors are significantly positively related to university motto cognition. "Cultural characteristics" and "practice activity" are among the most influential factors in college students’cognition on university motto.In order to improve college students’ cognition on the university motto, first of all, the propaganda of school motto should vary from person to person. Students should be educated the connotation of motto to understand university motto. Based on the research result, making the university motto should reflect the characteristics of the school; Finally, in order to improve college students’ cognition on university motto, the school shall hold a variety of practical activities to understand real meanings in university motto and urge them fully exercise university motto.
