With the rocketing development of modern social life, the current complicated social situation has been exerting significance influence over the social morality of contemporary college students. Social morality demands each citizen of fulfilling his social responsibility and of abiding by moral codes in activities related to public interest. Social morality is a moral code, cultural concept and ideological tradition formed in people’s social practical events through history course, playing an important role of maintaining benign social public life and interpersonal relation. College students are the hope of our nation, thus their social moral behavior is not a mere concern of themselves, but that of the whole society and nation. Overall, the social moral behaviors of the contemporary college students are in line with the requirements of current developments; however, there are still many problems should be improved, and due attention has not been attached to the key role of social morality education.While acquiring knowledge, college students receive much education in social mortality, but whether they could put what they have learned into practice largely depends on their moral emotional experience. And an active experience of moral sentiment, however, rests with the individual’s ability to perceive the cognitive perspective, experience and feelings of the moral behavior object, and thereby act accordingly, i.e. the individual’s empathy ability. Empathy is a reasonable reaction made on the basis of understanding others’feelings and sentiments, as well as an ability to sensitively sense the emotion state and perspective of the observed. Empathy, such superior social cognitive function of human beings is quite vital to the enhancing of people’s moral quality, and the improvement of social interpersonal relationship efficiency. Empathy can also broaden the horizon of moral education, boost students’self-awareness, self-care, and self-growth. Hence, to cultivate students’high social moral behavior is one of the key tasks of higher education. The paper mainly discusses the influence and functions of empathy over the nurturing of one’s moral behavior. The impact of empathy education on social morality is examined from theoretical perspective in this paper. The author deems since empathy receives much influence from external elements, it can be cultivated through education, on which, the author further expounds the effect and role of empathy over one’s formation of social morality and explores effective ways to cultivate college students’empathy ability.
