With the remarkable increase of senior high school’s enrollment, students tend to be of different levels and the gap between students become larger than before, especially in English learning, this problem is particularly serous at rural high schools.Meanwhile, the New English Curriculum for Senior High School(2003) stresses “that students should be the center of education and students’ development should be the start and final of education. Teachers must cherish students’ uniqueness and their feelings in the teaching process.”English reading is widely seen as an effective way in helping students study English and a foundation for obtaining other language skills such as listening, writing and speaking. Therefore, English reading teaching has always been very important in China’s English teaching. Chinese students have to face all types of English tests in their life and the reading part occupies a large portion and more scores. Students must do excellent on reading parts in order to get higher scores, this is especially true for high school students who will attend the College Entrance Examination. The traditional teaching method is difficult to take into account the different levels of students and can’t meet the requirement of the New English Curriculum. Therefore, it is of great value to explore a new teaching mode under the classroom-based teaching organization form to improve students’ reading ability and English competence. In recent years, level-based teaching has been proved successful in many experiments. The author thinks that maybe it can solve the problems she faces in her English reading teaching. So she does the research in her teaching and aimes to answer the three questions:(1). Does English Level-based reading teaching mode play a positive role in stimulating the interests, enthusiasm and initiative of rural high school students in learning English?(2). Can English level-based reading teaching mode improve students’ English reading ability and language competence at rural high school?(3).If yes, to what extent can level-based teaching mode improve students’ English reading at rural high schools ?In order to test the effectiveness of level-based teaching in English reading teaching at rural high school, the author conducted the experiment in her two paralleled classes(Class 7 and Class 8) in Grade Two. Varieties of research methods, such as questionnaire, test, comparison and summarizing are used in this research. Before the experiment, the author divided the students of Class 7 into different levels based on the theories of level-based teaching. During the experiment, the teacher taught Class 8 mainly in traditional teaching method with no difference for all students, while tried level-based teaching in Class 7.The result of the experiment shows that this method can improve students’ reading level and language skills, and enhance students’ interests, initiative and confidence in English learning. Therefore, the author believes that the research achievements will hopefully lend some theoretical and practical reference to the English reading teaching for rural high schools.
