Patriotism is a kind of ethic code and political principle that citizens need to abide. It is also a kind of national spirit for the progress of the Chinese nation. Therefore, it is of great significance to cultivating the patriotic feeling of children. However, as the reform and opening up and the process of globalization, the value gradually diversified and children’s patriotism cultivation is faced with great challenges so that it has great practical significance to explore how to cultivate the children’s patriotic feeling.Susanne K. Langer regards human beings as symbolic existence and believes art symbols represent human emotion. Her theory develops a new field of vision for us to cultivate the patriotic feeling of children. The basic idea of this study is to discuss the theoretical value of cultivating the patriotic feeling of children with art symbols by literature review. In addition, this study explores the practical possibility of cultivating the patriotic feeling of children with art symbols based on the action research with A primary school in Chongqing. Finally, the author rethinks the research form theoretical and practical aspects and provides some references for subsequent research.The research includes seven parts:In the introduction part, the author mainly introduces the background, goals, contents, value, methods of this research. It makes a comprehensive statement of the related literature, especially the literature about Langer’s research in art symbols and the patriotic feeling of children, and defines the core concepts about patriotic feeling, children and art symbols.The first part analyzes the theoretical value of cultivating the patriotic feeling of children with art symbols. Based on the Langer’s research in art symbols, this research regards art symbols representing human emotion as a living form, and believes children can feel the patriotic emotion with aesthetic intuition.The second part discusses the practical possibility of cultivating the patriotic feeling of children with art symbols based on the observation of A primary school in Chongqing and the interview with teachers. This part also offers some references for activity proposition from some aspects: setting activity goals and implementing activity plans, etc.The third part puts forward the activity plans to cultivate the patriotic feeling of children with art symbols. Based on the theoretical support in the second part and the practical exploration in the third part, this part proposes the activity plans from four aspects: activity goals, activity contents and themes, activity implementation and activity evaluation.The forth part describes the action research. The author makes up the research group with teachers in A Primary School in Chongqing. The group chooses the first, forth and sixth grade student as research objects.The fifth part rethinks the research form theoretical and practical aspects. The research discovers that teachers’ aesthetic appreciation ability is an important premise of activity implementation. In addition, in the process of activity implementation, teacher should pay more attention to art appreciation and aesthetic intuition, and encourage children to express their emotion by artistic creation so as to cultivate the patriotic feeling of children. At the same time, the teacher should respect children’s subjectivity and adhere to the development law of children(including cognition development law, aesthetic development law and the development law of patriotic feeling).The sixth part is the conclusion of this research. The art symbol types are not complete in the research and the objects of this study are not various. Using art symbols to cultivate the patriotic feeling of children is a complex and long-term process. It needs the family, school, society and subsequent researchers to make joint efforts.
