The proposal to establish a team of high-qualified teachers has been proposed in the National Mid-Long Term Educational Revolution and Plan 2010-2020. The quality of teachers defines the quality of social pillars in the future.As the social competition becomes fiercer, the professional stress of the teachers become increasingly severe as well, which may lead to the problem of teachers’ job burnout. The problems of job burnout, which have been extended to the education field since the 1980 s, have become a prominent problem. Since urban area is the main part of our education, rural education develops at a relatively low level, the job burnout of teachers in rural schools has not aroused public concern. Teachers’ job burnout problems pose a great threat to the physical and the mental health of teachers in these areas, the teaching quality and the stability of teaching faculty and meanwhile exert negative impact over the teachers’ teaching and the students’ development.This study took 43 English teachers and 942 students in rural middle schools in Gannan District as the investigation subject, discussed and analyzed job burnout of English teachers in rural middle school and offered some effective counter measures to the this controversial issue.This research is divided into six chapters. The first part introduction presents the background and real situation of secondary education, secondary English education and rural secondary English education in order to explain the purpose and value of this research and provides the definition of the core concept. The second chapter mainly summarizes the literature on job burnout of English teachers in rural middle school at home and abroad. The third part mainly introduces the theoretical foundation of this research including Conservation of Resource Theory, Social Competence Model and Ecological Framework. The fourth chapter makes a generalization about expressions and causes on job burnout of English teachers in rural middle school from perspective of research design, research procedure and data analysis. The fifth part discusses and analyzes the elements that may affect rural English teachers’ job burnout. At last, it proposes effective measures to mitigate job burnout of English teachers in rural middle school from perspective of society, organization and teachers themselves.
