This thesis carries out the research of the status of the appreciation education in English teaching in Gannan rural junior middle schools. The author affirms that the importance should be attached to appreciation education against the background of the reform of education theories, which is not only supported by solid theoretical foundation but also proved valid by many successful educational cases. Appreciation education is embodied in the new curriculum standard as it meets the urgent requirements of the junior middle school students in English learning. It is especially important for the rural junior middle school students due to their physical and mental development in the countryside environment.On the strength of the knowledge, questionnaires and interviews were carried out among 12 teachers and 179 students from a rural junior middle school named Zishan Middle School in Yudu County, Ganzhou City, aiming to investigate the present situation of the application of appreciation education in English teaching. The data collected by interviews were analyzed by qualitative method, and those collected through questionnaire was analyzed by SPSS 17.0 statistical software. The statistical analysis was made in three aspects: 1) the frequency distribution of students English learning interest, factors affecting English learning interest, evaluation of the relationship between teachers and students and their expectations to teachers; 2) the correlation between the above-mentioned variables and degrades; 3) the Chi-square Test which indicates the significance of statistical results.From the interview with English teachers, we have made findings as follows: most English teachers realize the importance and the necessity of the appreciation education, and apply it more or less in their teaching process, but the application is still far from benefiting each student.From the survey which includes questionnaires of 179 students and interviews, four major findings have been made as follows: first, the students interest in English learning in Gannan rural junior middle schools is not high; second, there are many kinds of factors affecting the students interest in English learning, and most of them can be altered by teachers; third, the present relationship between teachers and students is not very harmonious in the students opinion in Gannan rural junior middle schools; fourth, the students in Gannan rural junior middle schools generally hope their teachers can be easygoing and genuine and can appreciate them.Furthermore, four implications are drawn from the survey: first, teachers should be aware of the importance of appreciation education; second, teachers should appreciate all the students especially the !poor student"; fourth, the formative assessment should be given priority; finally, in the practice process, teachers should appreciate students sincerely, concretely and combine appreciation with criticism in an appropriate way.
