The United States pays great attention to independence and has strong tolerance, while China stresses family or organization and harmonious interpersonal relationship. There are many aspects differentiating between them, among which it includes values toward love and marriage. In order to understand the current university students’ cognitive attitudes towards love and marriage and how their attitudes differ from their parents’, the author did a questionnaire survey among 208 university students in America and China, among whom 66 from America and 70 from China are valid. Then the author conducted semi-structured interviews with 4 Chinese and 1 American university students. Through analyzing the data, the author finds that family structure, parents’ education and marriage do not have direct impact on students’ attitudes. Moreover, it shows that both American students and Chinese students have both tradition and modernity characteristics, and that Chinese students tend to be more open than American students in terms of their attitudes towards love and marriage. Then, the author employs Hofstede’s cultural value dimensions theory, Hall’s high/ low context theory as well as Ting Too-mey’s face theory to extend discussion concerning the results. In a word, this thesis not only enriches intercultural studies on love and marriage values and provides reference for parents and students, but also give hints to the teaching staff.
