The strength and quality of a university, in which teachers play the key role. Common course teachers, as an vital part of college teachers, which play a very important role in the construction and development of universities. Common course is offered to all undergraduate students. It plays an important role in the development of students’ basic quality and the development of knowledge. Therefore, common course teachers’ professional qualities, teaching methods etc. can affect more students. The common course teachers are the people who are also at the stage of development, they also have their own development aspirations and needs. Therefore, whether the development of universities, students expect or teachers themselves, these three aspects need teacher professional development. Therefore, it is of great significance to the common course teachers’ professional development. But at present, the professional development of common course teachers in universities are facing all kinds of difficulties. They are in a disadvantageous position, or even be marginalized, and becoming a relatively closed group in universities. In order to study the common course teachers’ professional development, the author chose a foreign language university--common course teachers of X university as the research object and studied the professional development of common course teachers of X university.This study identified the connotation and structure of common course teachers’ professional development by literature research. Then, on the basis of its structure, the author studied common course teachers’ professional development. The specific research idea is: First of all, this paper defined the concepts of teacher professional development(TPD), combed the connotation of the common course teachers’ professional development in universities, and cleared the basic content of teacher professional development; Secondly, grasped current situation of the common course teachers’ professional development of X university, found problems, and analyzed the causes of these problems by the methods of case interview and questionnaire survey. Finally, in view of the existing problems of the common course teachers’ professional development, based on the related theoretical and practical needs, feasibility and practical countermeasures and suggestions are proposed.Through this research, the problems of teachers’ structure of common course teachers in X university have been found, including the proportion of gender and age, educational background, learning-origin structure and title. And found the the dilemmas of common course teachers’ professional development in X University, specifically including an awkward situation, marginalized, big class teaching, and bad teaching effect; then included heavy teaching task and simple repetition; what’s more, weak scientific research ability, and they are facing title problem; the separation of scientific research and teaching and serious utilitarianism should be concerned. Through the in-depth interviews and causes analysis, the author found main reasons which led to the problems of common course teacher professional development of X university: no enough consciousness of teacher professional development; unreasonable teacher evaluation; rigid employing system and a lack of targeted platform provided by the university. In the end, some suggestions and strategies were arisen from the teacher individual level and school level.
