Human resource is a factor with initiative and creativity during various ones.With continuous impact of knowledge and globalization of economy, the focus ofcompetition of different industries begins to turn from capital, product and others tohuman resource. China has enjoyed the prosperity of social and economic developmentwith large scale of infrastructure and urban maintenance in recent years. People’s livingand working environment has been further improved due to the rapid growth brought byconstruction industry, acted as a pillar industry of national economy. Meanwhile, theoverall level of consumer price index rises quickly which makes construction labor costbecome higher than before with a steady increase in the practitioners. As one of themajor costs, the rise of labor cost is bound to increase the total cost which affects theprice and profit margins, even determines the overall competitiveness of constructionenterprises. Therefore, the paper makes a comprehensive analysis on the current statusand problems of construction industry based on a certain amount of literatures. Then itaims at exploring the development of construction labor cost with the combination ofquantitative and qualitative methods such as questionnaire and interview with experts,in order to make some contributions to the sustainable development of constructionindustry.First of all, the study defines the scope by clarifying the basic inception ofconstruction industry and labor cost according to the situation of construction industryin China. Secondly, the paper analyzes the impacts and problems faced with the risinglabor cost after figuring out the status of construction labor cost development fromdifferent aspects. Then it collects a large number of questionnaires contained detailedproject cost information, almost actual public buildings and urban residential buildings,as a basis for the changing trend of construction labor, material and machinery cost overthe years so that identify the main factors affecting construction labor cost. Finally, thepaper puts forward some related countermeasures and suggestions to the labor costmanagement to provide a scientific basis for the formulation of effective policies andreferences according to the status of construction industry.
