City size and city functions are two aspects of study on city system. It makes scholars various fields rise of the study on Chinese service industry that Chinese tertiary industry raises beyond the secondary industry with the expansion of city size and sustainable development of the national economy. Based on the2010census of China county data and the study of the city system, dividing287cities into five levels, combining15services categories into10categories, the thesis give thorough analysis of the association with the Chinese city size and service industry’s employment proportion and the specialized features of city services functions. And the thesis explains the causes of these associations from the aspect of the function properties of various types of service industry. Get the following conclusions.First, basically, proportion of service sector improves with the expansion of city size. But there are some special cities in each levels group. On the functional properties of the service industry concerned, with low added value, directly facing the residents, more than a simple repetition of labor, life services just have a weak promoting effect on city economic growth. Therefore, five life services have high employment proportion in each city, and their differences of employment proportion in various levels group are small. With high added value, not directly facing the residents, mostly for high-tech industries, requiring a high level of professional quality workforce, producer services have a strong promoting effect on city economic growth. Therefore, five producer industries have low employment proportion, and their differences of employment proportion in various level groups are huge.Second, each service industry has different employment structure in each kinds of city, science, information, culture services industry’s optimal regression model science are three types of quadratic curves; wholesale and retail trade, financial services industry’s optimal regression model are two types S-shaped curve; real estate is a logarithmic curve; leasing and business services is power curve. Geographical location, natural resources and other conditions will make low-level cities in a particular industry specialization easily. So some low-level cities will have a higher employment proportion in a particular industry. The higher the level of the city center, the stronger the functions, the development of each services industry are more balanced, difficult to have a particularly outstanding service employment proportion.Third, the average level of city services’specialization in various levels improves with the improving of city level. Some low-level cities have high level of specialization for certain industries developed. High-level city group lacks specialization particularly prominent cities. For each category of service industry, five life services have stability specialized rate, with small differences in various levels. Five producer services have low average specialized rate in low-level city group, and high average specialized rate in high-level city group, which reflecting the service industry structural upgrading. With the incensement of city level, service employment structure prefers to homogeneity.Forth, it is mainly small and medium cities that specialized in four services: leasing and business services, social services, financial services, accommodation and catering, transportation, storage and postal services. It is mostly light manufacturing developed cities that specialized in wholesale and retail trade. Cities specialized in real estate, science, culture, information, have big average population and high grades.
