Relationship Between Medical Workers’ Work Characteristics, Work-family Conflict And Work Burnout

Work burnout is the psychological response to work stress, which is prevalent in human-service occupations and medical workers can be regarded as representative of those occupations. The burnout situation of medical workers can affect the therapeutic and recovery effect of the patients which may intense the relationship between the medical workers and the patients, and that’s why figuring out the reasons of medical worker’s burnout is important. In order to make clear the relationship between medical workers’work characteristics, work-family conflict and their burnout, with stratified sampling,400medical workers out of5hospitals were selected to fill in the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Work Design Questionnaire (WDQ) and the Work Interfering with Family scale and Family Interfering with Work scale (WDF&FIW). Using correlation analysis, we found that age, time engaged in medical work and the monthly income are negatively correlated with the burnout of medical workers and the nature of the hospital they work in can affect their burnout situation significantly. We also found that job characteristics, knowledge characteristics and social characteristics out of work characteristics are negatively correlated with work burnout and work interfering with family and family interfering with work are positively correlated with work burnout. With multiple regression analysis, we found that demographic variables explains7%of the variance in work burnout, job characteristics explains23%of the variance, knowledge characteristics7%, social characteristics4%and work-family conflict3%. Besides, we found that the Chinese edition of Work Design Questionnaire has satisfying reliability and validity, however it needs further revise. In the end, we suggested some intervention measures to reduce the work burnout of the medical workers.
