With diminishing resources and increasingly emergence of accumulatedcontradictions over the years, resource-based cities are facing serious challenges intheir sustainable development. Naturally, the frontiers and the hot issues of currentresearches are how to adjust the industrial structure and how to correctly choose thedevelopmental trend and route of continuous industries. As it is built by coal resourceand is a typical traditional resource-based city, Pingxiang is facing great problems inthe industrial development.On the basis of industry life cycle theory and continuous industry developmenttheory, this thesis analyzes Pingxiang’s industries combining with its city situationsand industries’ features by qualitative and quantitative methods. As a result, this thesisselects continuous leading industries suitable for Pingxiang’s development.Firstly, this thesis makes a summary and review of research findings at home andabroad; secondly, this thesis elaborates concepts of resource-based cities,resource-based cities’ industrial transition and continuous leading industries selections;thirdly, this thesis profoundly analyzes Pingxiang’s current dilemma, and adopts theanalytical method SWOT to comprehensively evaluate its environment for industrialtransition. Based on those evaluations, this thesis finds out that Pingxiang, whichembodies good environment for transition, has prominent advantages andopportunities in transition as a whole; furthermore, this thesis formulates a model ofresource-based cities’ continuous industries selections to make an empirical researchon Pingxiang city. The results show: industrial development in Pingxiang is generallyin the middle period of industrialization but has prominent features to step into thelate period of industrialization; with diminishing coal resource, losing advantages ofextractive industry especially Coal mining and Washing industry and shortage ofindustrial development motivation, industrial development is gradually transformedfrom coal resource to other resources and their relative manufacturing industries.Pingxiang should focus on making the intermediate and intensive manufacturingindustry as its current continuous industries; lastly, based on the analyses above andresource-based cities’ features, this thesis puts forward concrete suggestions forresource-based cities’ industrial structure transition.
