Increasingly frequent exchanges and cooperation of the political, economic cultural and other aspects between China and other countries encourage more and more foreigners to work, study or live, and start their sojourn life in China.Sojourners’ cross-cultural phenomenon was noticed by scholars due to the effect of the local culture and sojourn country culture. And tourism, a king of cultural activity, will promote sojourners’ cross-cultural adaption, and as the same time, sojourners’ demand for tourism will be more intense. Therefore, the paper surveys the tourism motivation of sojourners by questionnaire, and understands sojourners’ inner need through the survey results, and then studies the tourism market development for this special group.First of all, this paper describes the research background and significance of the research. What’s more, this paper summarizes the research status of scholars who come from home and abroad in terms of sojourners and tourism motivation. Finally, on the basis of studies, this paper defines the definition of sojourner. Sojourner refers to the people who leave their own place, live in an environment which is different from their own culture for six months to five years, and during the period of living, study, work and so on are the main purpose, sometimes along with tourism but it is not the main purpose.The main part of the paper surveys sojourners in China by questionnaire and analysis the personal basis information and tourism characteristics of the sample. Based on the analysis of sojourners’ selection of tourist attractions, tourism way, travel frequency, cost and the way to obtain information, the paper understands the sojourners’ inner need preliminarily on the tourist preference.The empirical analysis of this paper organizes the survey data firstly, then factor analysis is carried out on the sojourners’ tourism motivation by SPSS software, and extracts four common factors, respectively named “Experience the culture”,“Amusing and Relaxing”, “Reputation and Social Contacting” and “Pursuing stimulation”. Among them, “Experience the culture” is sojourners’ first tourism motivation, bias to learning and understanding the local folk culture. Finally, this paper analysis the influence of demographic characteristics to tourism motivation, and finds that tourism motivation is different in gender, age, the level of education, income level, the length of sojourning time and the purpose of coming China.On the basis of empirical analysis, this paper studies sojourners’ tourism market development. The paper mainly studies from three aspects which includes the content, strategy and security system of the market development.Finally, the conclusion part summarizes the research conclusion and innovation points objectively, points out the shortages and looks forward to the future research direction.
