Industry-University-Research Institution’s Knowledge Collaboration Of Chinese Bio-pharmaceutical Industry

As one of the strategic emerging industries, bio-pharmaceutical industry, of which the characteristics is high input, high risk and long period, is a typical knowledge-intensive industry. Its development highly depends on technology and knowledge, and this leads to the result that industry-university-research (IUR) cooperation is an effective way to accelerate the industry’s global competitiveness promotion, At present, there are many domestic and foreign studies on the bio-pharmaceutical industry, however, most of them focus on perspectives like industry clusters, technology exploitation and product commercialization. Although some researchers’studies involve the content of bio-pharmaceutical industry’s IUR cooperation, they are always restricted to descriptive analysis and empirical research towards this domain is limited. Bio-pharmaceutical industry, as a kind of strategic emerging industry which gets a high attention of Chinese government, needs to be studied from the way of improving its capacity, and analyzing that how can enterprises improve innovation performance and competitiveness through IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration is one of the new perspectives. Therefore, the research on IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration of Chinese bio-pharmaceutical industry is an important proposition which has both practical and theoretical value.Based on these research backgrounds and objectives, the dissertation presents three problems to be discussed:(1) Analyze the whole situation of IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration of Chinese bio-pharmaceutical industry. (2) Analyze the key factors which affect the IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration of Chinese bio-pharmaceutical industry based on the perspective of inter-organizational relationship. (3) Explore the evolution of IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration with the development of Chinese bio-pharmaceutical industry. In order to solve these above problems, the dissertation reviews bio-pharmaceutical industry theory, knowledge collaboration theory, IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration theory and other related theories firstly, then studies in theory these above problems and puts forward related propositions, furthermore search patent databases at home and abroad to get patent data of Chinese bio-pharmaceutical industry applied by IUR institutions and do empirical research by social network analysis.The main conclusions of this dissertation are in three aspects as following:(1) The level of IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration of Chinese bio-pharmaceutical industry is low, which the relationship between the enterprise and the university-research institution is mostly one to one and the cooperation is low-frequent, large-scale collaborative network has not yet formed, and the university-research institutions play leading and mediate roles. (2) Based on the perspective of inter-organizational relationship, the knowledge distance, psychological distance and geographic distance have effect on IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration of Chinese bio-pharmaceutical industry, but the influential effect of different factors is distinct. (3) As Chinese bio-pharmaceutical industry developing, the go-aheadism of collaborative body, collaborative body’s status, collaborative degree and key fectors in each period of IUR institution’s; knowledge collaboration are constantly changing.This dissertation will extend the research of IUR institution’s knowledge collaboration from qualitative research to quantitative research and from static research into dynamic research, while expanding the scope of theoretical research on the bio-pharmaceutical industry. At the same time, the dissertation also has important value for the researches on IUR collaborative innovation, knowledge collaboration, strategic emerging industry and others.
