With the increasing development of urbanization, the phenomenon persists that cultivated land urban are occupied by construction land. Therefore, there are an obvious contradiction between “constructing” and “eating”. Given the economic contribution by cultivated land conversion, its occupation will last for a long time. In this circumstance, it is significant to evaluate multi-function of cultivated land scientifically and reasonably for a correct understanding of the value of cultivated land. What’s more, the research on the degree of coordinated development and mutual effect relationship of urbanization and multi-function of cultivated land is important to harmonize them.This paper took Wuhan city as an example. Firstly, multi-function evaluation index system for urbanization and cultivated land were established respectively. Then the variations and trends of urbanization level and multi-function of cultivated land in Wuhan city were calculated quantificationally from the timeline(1996- 2011) and based on minimax value method, entropy method, and comprehensive index method. Secondly, the coupling correlation relationship in urbanization system, cultivated land multi-function system, and both systems were evaluated respectively. Thirdly, the relationships between four aspects of urbanization(urbanizations of population, economy, land, and society) and cultivated land(functions of producing economy, food security, employment security, and ecology) were obtained by canonical correlation analysis. Finally, related policy suggestions were put forward to promote the coordination of urbanization and multi-function of cultivated land. This study showed that, during 1996 to 2001:(1) The overall urbanization level of Wuhan city were on the rise. Though comprehensive improvements were observed in its sub systems, including urbanizations of population, economy, land, and society, their coupling level was relative low. And the coupling coordination degree rose slowly in a serious imbalance circumstance.(2) The overall function of cultivated land of Wuhan city had fluctuations in the development. The producing economy function of cultivated land showed a trend of rising year by year. While the food security, employment security, and ecology function of cultivated land showed an opposite trend. Besides that, their coupling level was low as well, and the coupling coordination degree fluctuated between moderate disorders and serious disorders.(3) Interactive coupling relationship existed between the urbanization system and multi-function cultivated land system, although it was in the rivalry phase, which meant a low level coupling. But from the overall aspect, the coupling coordination degree was transiting from unbalance to balance state. And this transition is the process of perfection with time.(4) The urbanizations of population, economy, and land have significant impacts on the multi-function of cultivated land, while the urbanization of society is not clear.
