"Large population but less land resources, lack of reserve land resources, the increasingly sharp contradiction between human and land" is the basic national conditions of our country. How to deal with the relationships between social economic development and land protection, rational use of land, optimizing adjustment of different geographic regional economic mode of land use structure is one of the problems in today’s society worthy of further study. Studying the relation between the two will provide powerful basis for the local government in land use planning, optimal allocation of regional and maintain ecological stability, and will be beneficial to achieve a reasonable and orderly construction land expansion and promote the development of social economy healthy and stable. Understanding the different relation between the two among regions has far-reaching significance for realizing the sustainable development of regional economic, social, ecological.Firstly, we analyzed the causal relationship and the influence factors and the influence mechanism between each other from the theoretical level. Then, based on the date of land use structure and socio-economic structure of Wuhan metropolitan area, analyzed the correlation between them in-depth. Methods included the gray correlation coefficient, simple correlation analysis, cluster analysis and principal component-canonical correlation analysis. Then, the metropolitan area is partitioned based on the results of cluster analysis of the land resources in 9 cities. At last, we made further analysis of the differences in correlation between land use structure and socio-economic structure among regions. Final results obtained are as follows:(1) The relationship between land use structure and socio-economic structure are both reciprocal causation and influence each other. Changes in the population, economic development and the change of industrial structure, technological progress, goods circulation, the change in the income distribution impact on land use structure from the different level; The land use structure influence socio-economic structure from class quantity change and spatial change.(2) In terms of Wuhan metropolitan area, the land use structure and socio-economic structure was significantly correlated. The proportion of construction land and unused land increase would help to develop the second industry, optimize the industrial structure, improve the level of residents’ consumption, adjust the balance of income distribution, but not conducive to the development of the first industry and would widen the income ratio between urban and rural areas, which is not conducive to the improvement of distribution structure. Agricultural land and the first industrial GDP and population density has significant positive correlation, but the increase of the proportion of agricultural land was not conducive to the industrial structure, consumption structure, exchange structure and technology structure optimization. The tertiary industry GDP increase positively related to the proportion of cultivated land and unused land.(3) By using Cluster Analysis according to land resource endowment of the 9 cities in Wuhan metropolitan area, we divided it into three kind of regions. Region Ⅰ included Wuhan and Ezhou; region Ⅱ included Huanggang, Huangshi and Xianning; region Ⅲ included Xiaogan, Xiantao, Qianjiang and Tianmen. The correlation between land use structure and socio-economic structure differed significantly among these three regions. The correlation between the proportion of construction land and socio-economic structure showed significant negative in region Ⅱ and region Ⅲ, while it was not significant in region Ⅰ. The correlation between the proportion of agricultural land and socio-economic structure differed among the regions on population density, per capita grain, three industries GDP proportion and urban and rural income ratio. Though the correlation between unused land proportion and the GDP proportion of first and second industries and urban and rural income ratio had differences among different regions, the correlation between unused land proportion and most indexes of socio-economic was significantly positive. We chose indicators based on industrial structure, consumption structure, import-export structure, technological structure and allocation structure to construct an innovative indicator system. In order to improve the accuracy of the result, we tried to combine the Principal Component Analysis(PCA) with Canonical Correlation Analysis(CCA) to analyze the correlation between land use structure and socio-economic structure. The results show that there is a significant correlation between land use structure and socio-economic structure and this kind of correlation differed significantly among regions which had different resource endowments.
