After 30 years of rapid development, Chinese retail chain as an advanced retail business model has become an important part of China’s economy. As national policy support, in recent years, China’s online and offline retail industry has obtained the astonishing development. However, China Chain Operation Association has surveyed 163 companies and 134 chain stores nationwide, the results show that: Although the chain is developing rapidly, but human resource issues has become the most important factor in the development of chain enterprises. The most important reason is the rapid development manager of enterprise competency cannot, therefore, necessary to the retail chain manager competency research.The study based on an in-depth analysis on domestic and international manager competence model of the retail chain, combine of the characteristics of the retail chain, the first uses behavioral event interview and documentary research to determine the 22 competency factors of the manager, and then design the questionnaire, collected data, do exploratory factor analysis to construct the competency model. Then uses confirmatory factor analysis to verify the model has been constructed. At last analyze the current level of the manager’s competency.The results show that the model include management skills, interpersonal ability, professional ability, development potential and personal qualities five major categories, including a total of 20 competency factors. Management capacity dimensions include: organization and coordination skills, innovation, decision-making, planning capabilities and leadership; personal qualities dimensions include: confidence, fairness and justice, accountability and anti-stress; development potential include the following dimensions: learning and development, persistence and achievement motivation; interpersonal ability dimensions include: guidance and sharing, team building, knowledge and employment communication skills; operational capacity dimensions include: customer-oriented, problem-solving abilities, skills and knowledge of the global outlook. The five dimensions outline retail chain manager who should possess the competencies qualities.The result of this study has a certain reference and guidance on recruitment, career development, training, assessment of the retail chain manager.
