Business model innovation has become a new source of improving performance and getting competitive advantage of enterprises. However, there were few papers on business model innovation and performance in current academic research, and most of them used the case study, there was a lack of empirical study with a large sample. What’s more, according to contingency theory, there is not a common business model which is applicable to all kind of situations, different themes of business model innovation are required to match different kind of situations with different opportunities and threats, thereby enhancing competitiveness. Therefore, this paper divides business model innovation into two types: efficiency-centered business model innovation and novelty-centered business model innovation according to Zott&Amit(2007), then conducts empirical analysis to explore the influences of both kinds of business model innovation on performance, and to explore the different influences of the both kinds of business model innovation on performance under different life-cycle stages of enterprise and different relational embeddedness. Study results found that:(1) Both of efficiency-centered business model innovation and novelty-centered business model innovation have a positive effect on firm performance.(2) The positive effects of a highly efficiency-centered business model design on firm performance have no significant difference between firms in their later stages and firms in their early stages; While the positive effects of a highly novelty-centered business model design on firm performance are stronger for firms in their early stages than for firms in their later stages(3) The positive effects of a highly efficiency-centered business model design on firm performance are stronger for firms in the strong coupling link state than for firms in the weak coupling link state; While the positive effects of a highly novelty-centered business model design on firm performance are stronger for firms in the weak coupling link state than for firms in the strong coupling link state.
