With the fast-changing market demands and the rapid development of enterprises, how to improve operational performance and effects of the assembly line was regarded as more and more important by the manufacturing enterprises. How to reduce costs and ensure product quality, while meeting the requirements of various types of mass production, becomes one of the main goals of modern manufacturing. Making full use of the existing resources and delivering the products to customers with low cost and high quality, is an effective way for enterprises to survive in the fierce market competition.Firstly, this paper describes the present situation of the production line of HF Company’s painting workshop. Through the investigation, study and analysis of the current capacity of the painting workshop, the assembly line of the workshop was finally confirmed as the bottleneck process. After that, a preliminary optimization is conducted on the personnel allocation of assembly line by using experiment. Because personnel number on the products wiping process is not fixed, the time used on wiping each product is always different and the assembly operation process is changing all the time. While ensuring the assembly quality of products, the personnel allocation of the assembly line was optimized the to find out the better allocation scheme by using the methods of experimental design. Then, balancing and optimization of the whole assembly line according to the optimal personnel allocation scheme is carried on. Through obtaining the operation time of each station using the method of the work measurement, the bottleneck and excess capacity stations of the assembly line were then out. These bottleneck and excess capacity stations are analyzed and improved by using the assembly line balancing methods and theories of industrial engineering. At last, evaluation of the results of this optimization was carried on.Through the optimization study elaborated on this paper, while reducing production costs and ensuring product quality, the efficiency and effectiveness of the assembly line was improved, and the production capacity of the painting workshop was enhanced.
