In response to the grim situation of large-scale random and fluctuationg renewable energy access to power system, the construction of reliable, economical and efficient smart grid has become a world consensus. As a key part in the power grid construction, the existing substation technology cannot meet the requirements of building a strong and smart grid, which is highly automated, intelligent and regulation integrated. As a result, it becomes urgent to innovative design concept and improve design methods, and then the research on 220kV new generation smart substation design and optimization becomes necessary.Firstly, the system architecture of intelligent substations is analized in depth, and the shortcomings are summaried. Moreover, based on the smart-grid construction demands, the system structure and main technical of the new generation intelligent substation are systematically introdudced.Secondly, considering the insufficiences like sub-professional design, device functional independence of intelligent substatio, smart isolation circuit breakers are produced by manufacturer, which integrates the circuit breakers, isolation switch, electronic transformers, sensors and other electronic components. This integration creates a opportunity for the optimization of main electrical wiring designand general layout, effectively reduces the covered area of new generation intelligent substation, and saves investment simultaneously.Moreover, to solve the problems of large projects in commissioning of secondary equipments and their integartion test, and long construction period and so on, the prefabricated cabin for secondary equipment, the prefabricated cable or optical cable with Plug and Play are developed. Consequently, the integration of secondary equipments can be finished within factorys, whice starts with civil engineering and primary electrical engineering and greatly redeces the project cycle.Besides, combined with the advanced information collection and communication technology, the layered protection system of "local level, station-domain level and wide area level" is adopted in the new generation intelligent substation. And the coordination between protection system with secure and stable control system has been reached, and the fault identification and processing capacity habe been arised to the system level, which effectively reduces the possibility of cascading failures and blackouts accident s.Finally, taking a 220kV actual project as an example, the design process of a new generation intelligent substation is systematically introduced, which includes the selection of design scheme, the main electrical wiring of various voltage levels, general layout, selection for primary and secondary equipments, and so on.
